Changes in the Senior Citizen Years

Your body is older and certainly isn’t as strong as when you were young. Things sag and sometimes ache. You get out the salve and lay it on the muscles thick, knowing that you’ll have to continue to care for your body more and more through the years. You knew this time was coming, but what can you do?

Do you dream of the old days?

Most do, but it doesn’t help, does it? Life is a process of stages, and if you are older, you are in a stage that takes a lot out of you.

“I used to be able to run faster, lift more weights, and do activities where I didn’t strain myself, requiring days of recovery.”

It's true but remember that things are different. Life can still be enjoyable even though you can’t go full out anymore. And everyone fortunate enough to get older is in the same boat.

While it's okay to enjoy memories of days gone by, the life you lead now can be just as sweet. It’s a matter of having the right mindset and knowing that limitations affect us all. Diet and exercise should be an essential part of your daily routine.

Even with all the health issues that I deal with, I can still enjoy the little things like walking with my wife in a park or even on a beach. Memories come a mile a minute when we walk on a beach, and I remember my father and I jumping up when a wave was about to crash. Or later memories with my son when he first stepped into the Gulf of Mexico. (Of course, we did see a shark about ten feet away from us, but that’s another story.)

I know it can be difficult for widowers to go on in life. My mother was a widow at 53. We were all worried about her and how she would go on without Dad. She did terrific. She volunteered at the church and even rang the bell for the Salvation Army a few times. She met neighbors, and they went out and did things together. I was proud of the way she made the best of the situation. She passed at 88, still driving her car and living at home.

I went off on a tangent talking about my mother. She must have been on my mind today.
